Biography

Parents and Achievements

John Hamilton was an illegitimate son of John Hamilton and an unknown mother.[1][2][3] He received a legitimization under the Great Seal 22 December 1600.[1]

He first represented (as a minor baron) Lanarkshire as an M.P. in 1605,[4] so could have been born no later than 1584. He also served as the M.P. from Lanarkshire in 1612, 1617, 1621, and 1625.[4] On 25 May 1608 a charter was issued confirming the ownership of the Castle of Kinclevin in Perthshire to himself and his wife, Jean Campbell.[5] He also acquired the lands of Bargany and Carlock, as well as additional lands in Ayrshire, by charter dated 15 June 1624.[5]

Marriage and Children

John Hamilton married Jean Campbell, daughter of Alexander Campbell, Bishop of Brechin, and Helen Clephane, daughter of George Clephane of Carselogie and widow of Robert Arbutnott.[1][6] The exact date of their marriage is unknown but occurred before 2 November 1605, when they jointly had a charter from James Bonar of Rossie for the lands of Kinclavin.[7][8] There were at least seven children from this marriage:

Death

Sir John Hamilton of Bargany is believed to have died soon after 1637.[1][3]

Research Notes

Daughter Catherine

Richardson lists Catherine's husband as 'John Drummond, Knt., of Machany' and lists as a source The Scots Peerage, which references Catherine's husband as "Sir John Drummond of Machany, second son of James, first Lord Maderty." This was evidently a typo. The second son of James, 1st Lord Maderty, was James, 1st of Machany, who did actually marry Catherine Hamilton.[11][12]John Drummond, 2nd Lord Madderty, was the eldest son of James, 1st Lord Maderty, and he married Margaret Leslie, daughter of Patrick Leslie, 1st Lord Lindores.[14]

Disputed Daughter Jean

Both Richardson and Balfour Paul list an unknown daughter of Sir John Hamilton and Jean Campbell who married Sir William Vere. It is possible that this unknown daughter was named after her mother Jean but there is no evidence of this, and no reliable sources that indicate she married anyone named Thomas Hay. Therefore, Jean Hamilton needs to be detached from this profile as a daughter of John and Jean and can be reattached later if proof is found of her existence.

Possible Area of Future Research

The unknown daughter who married Sir William Vere (aka Weir) may be traceable through the Weir family (the Hamiltons and the Weirs intermarried through several generations). A possible starting point might be Sir William Weir but these profiles are mostly unsourced and need a good deal of work, and if the dates on William's profile are correct it may have been one of his sons who married John Hamilton's daughter.

Unless anyone is aware of a reliable source indicating that John Hamilton ever had a daughter named Jean who married Thomas Hay, Jean Hamilton will be detached from this profile, and may be reattached at a later date if evidence of her existence and proof of her connection to these parents is found.

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Patrick Houston and Magna Carta surety barons Richard de Clare and Gilbert de Clare that needs development by the Magna Carta Project. I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of this profile and will add a project box and project section to the biography. This profile still needs to be developed against the project's checklist. Thanks!
