Esther was born in 1818, the daughter of Rufus Hamlin and an unknown wife. ^[1]

In the 1850 census Esther aged 32 was in Brookfield, Fairfield, Connecticut, United States. She was living with her husband, Elizer, four older children from his previous wife, and four girls likely to be hers. ^[3]
