Biography

Helen Scott Blacker Hamlin was born April 3, 1857 in Kincardine, Bruce, Ontario, Canada to William Latham Blacker Hamlin and Mary Blanche Riddell. Her parents immigrated to Canada in 1848.

In 1861, Helen lived with her parents and siblings in Collingwood, Grey, Ontario. The family belonged to the Church of England. [1]

Helen, age 23, married Richard Miles Heron, age 26, in Maxwell, Grey, Ontario, Canada on July 7, 1878. Richard was a merchant and a Methodist; Helen was a member of the Church of England. Eliza Hamlin, Helen's sister, served as a witness to the marriage. [2]

In 1881, Helen "Nellie" and Richard, and their 7-month-old son, Thomas, lived in Osprey, Grey, Ontario, Canada. They were Methodists. Richard was a salesman. [3]

In 1901, Helen (Nellie) lived with five of her children in Osprey, Grey East, Ontario. (It's unknown why Richard and the other children are not enumerated in the census.) [4]

Helen and Richard's children were all born in Ontario - Thomas, William, Richard, Latham, Charles, Helen, Victoria and Eugene. Daughter, Helen, died at the age of 7 in Ontario. Eugene only appears in the 1905 New York Census, and is presumed to have died before 1910. The family immigrated to the United States in 1902 and settled in Buffalo, Erie, New York. In the 1910 Census, Helen reported having seven children, six of whom were still living. Family records also confirm seven children. [5]

In 1905, Helen and Richard lived in Buffalo Ward 21, Erie, New York with their children. Their eldest son, Thomas, was married and not living at home. Richard, Sr. was employed as a carpenter, and his namesake, Richard George, was a grocery clerk. Latham and Charles were occupied as dry goods store clerks. [6] In 1910, Helen and Richard, and their three youngest children, Latham, Charles and Mary Victoria lived on Vermont Street in Buffalo. Richard was retired. [7]

Helen Scott Heron died on April 17, 1923 and was buried in Tug Hill Cemetery in Cattaraugus, New York. Her husband, Richard, died in 1934.[8] [9]
