John Hammett, son of John Hammett and Sarah (Carr) Hammett [1] , was born October 10, 1705 in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island, and died 1772 in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island.
Parents
His father had emigrated to America from England with his brother in 1685 and settled originally in Martha’s Vineyard before moving to Warwick, Rhode Island. By profession he was a school master, but also served as town clerk before founding the 2nd Baptist Church. He also served as clerk of Assembly and Attorney-General. His wife, Sarah, was the daughter of Rhode Island Colony Governor Caleb Carr and they were married by Governor Samuel Cranston.
Marriage
John, the son, married Dorothy Rhodes in 1726. They would have at least 3 children together. John was ordained as an assistant and Elder of the Warwick Six Principle Baptist Church.[2] He died unexpectedly in 1752 at the age of 47. Dorothy died about 1805 at the age of 95 or 96.
