ACCIDENTAL DEATH.
An inquest was held on November 10 at Mallala Council Chambers by Mr. J. Forbes, J.P., on the body of Frederick Hammond, aged 41, who died the previous day by falling from a load of hay. Mr. S. Clunches was foremen of the Jury. Daniel Ryan, farm labourer of Mallala, deposed that he was in the employ of Mr. John Harris, of Mallala. Was working with deceased yesterday loading hay. They were tying on the load when the rope came undone on the off side, and caused deceased to fall off the load. He did not speak afterwards, but seemed much hurt. Spoke to him, but he did not answer. He lived nearly half an hour afterwards Did not see any wounds. He appeared to have fallen on the side of his head. There were marks of earth upon it. A son of deceased and himself opened his shirt front, when he seemed to revive a little, but afterwards got worse. It happened in Mr. A. Vawser's paddock on the Windsor-road. Dr. Brownrigg was passing at the time, and he was called and came. John Hammond, son of the deceased, gave corroborative evidence. Dr. H. W. Brownrigg, of Mallala, deposed that deceased only lived ten minutes after he arrived. Examined the body, and believed the neck to have been broken from the fall off the load of hay close by. Deceased likewise presented all the symptoms of concussion of the brain. The Jury found that the deceased came to his death by the fall from a load of hay, caused by the slipping of a rope, which was supposed to have been tied by himself, and they consider the cause of his death to be purely accidental, and no blame attachable to any one. The foreman intimated that the Jury had unanimously decided to hand their fees to the widow. The Coroner said he intended to do the same himself. The funeral of the deceased took place in the afternoon, when about thirty vehicles followed in the procession. There was a great number round the grave, showing the high respect in which the deceased was held by every one. Mr. Richard Woolcock officiated at the grave, and spoke in the highest terms of the consistent Christian character of the departed one, who was a member of the Church of Christ. Steps are to be taken to help the widow.
