Biography
Private James Hammond served in the United States Army in the War of 1812 Service started: Unit(s): Lincoln's 2nd Regiment, Mass. Militia Service ended:
Per the records "U.S., War of 1812 Service Records, 1812-1815" James fought in and survived the War of 1812 against the British - he was a Private in the 2 REG'T (LINCOLN'S) Mass. Militia at Plattsburg, NY.[3]
His wife Catherine died in 1822, and on 9 May 1824, James married Ruth Sherman in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.[4] Ruth died soon thereafter, and James next married Lydia (Howard) Hammond (1793-) on 10 May 1828 in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
In 1850, the family is living in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.[5]
