Biography

Charles Hammond was born in Romford, Essex, England. His birth date is uncertain but he was baptized on 7 December 1834 in the parish of Great Baddow, Essex. On 27 February 1851 Charles (aged 16), with his older brother James (22), boarded the "Steadfast" at Gravesend (London) and sailed for New Zealand, arriving at Lyttleton 8 June, 1851. They left behind nine brothers and one sister, as well as their parents. The electoral role of 1855-56 in Akaroa lists Charles Hammond as a sawyer and leaseholder at German Bay. On 30 April 1858, he married Rebecca McKinlay (aged 20) in Kaiapoi. Over the next 10 years they had 5 children. In 1862, Charles was on the electoral role of the district of Timaru where he was listed as owning land at Rhodes on the banks of the Opihi river. In 1866, Charles and Rebecca moved to the West Coast where they ran a store at the Waimea Goldfield. They returned to Canterbury in 1868 but seem to have separated shortly afterwards. Rebecca apparently returned to the West Coast shortly afterwards, because in July 1869 she appeared before the Magistrates Court at Stafford, charged with selling alcohol without a license. Charles re-married in 1901 to Christiana Dawson. He passed away in 1906 (aged 71). He is buried at Peel Forest in South Canterbury alongside Christiana.
