Richard Hammond left his home in Bradford, England and emigrated to New Zealand with his brother Matthew, arriving in Wellington in on 7 November 1842 on the ship 'George Fyfe'. The families of both men also made the voyage. They were New Zealand Company assisted migrants and early arrivals in Wellington, settling initially on ‘Porirua Road’ and running a cartage business before leasing Sir Charles Clifford’s Tixall Farm. They set up in business operating several sawmills in the Wellington area.
Encouraged to move into the Rangitikei by William Fox, they reached Tutaenui in the summer of 1852-1853 in search of land. They purchased from the Crown an 833-acre block, selling it in 1856: it was named Sedgecombe by it new owner, William Galpin. The Hammonds acquired the 2,475-acre York Farm (originally Motuweka) from William Dorset, its southern boundary being the 3,568-acre ‘Westoe’ owned by Sir William Fox.
The land was farmed by both men for 10 years until the partnership was dissolved in 1865. Richard bought out his brothers interest and Matthew acquiring Killeymoon near Bulls.
York Farm was subdivided and auctioned following Richard Hammond’s death in 1888.
Richard is buried at St Stephens Anglican Cemetery, Marton.
