JOSEPH HAMMOND was born around 1690 in England or possibly the Massachusetts colony. His parents are unknown. He married Rachel Gardiner (1696-1756), daughter of William Gardiner and Elizabeth (Wilkinson), around 1715. Most records say he was a tailor and worked in Swansea, Wales. He then immigrated to North Kingstown, Rhode Island around 1717. He received land that was part of the early “Pettaquamscutt purchase.” They had 5 children: John (1717-1792); Lucy; Benjamin; William; Rachel; and Joseph. Joseph died on June 24, 1776 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
