Biography

Henry Holmes Hammond, first son of Calvin Hammond and Lucy McGrath, was born September 5, 1830, in West Windsor, Windsor, Vermont, USA. [1]

While he lived, he worked both as a farmer and a carpenter. [1]

In the 1850 US Census, Henry has moved from his parent's home, and is living with the Wait family, in West Windsor, Windsor, Vermont, USA. List: [2]

During the Civil War, on August 22, 1861, he enlisted into Company A, 12th Regiment of Vermont, attaining the final rank of Sergeant. He was discharged January 1862, having served a total of 4 months, 23 days. [5]

In August 31,1863, he married Caroline F. Bellows, who was born April 3, 1849. [1]

It appears he was drafted again in 1863, when he was 33 years old. [6]

In the 1870 US Census, Henry is living with his wife and 2 sons in West Windsor, Windsor, Vermont. [7]

Note: Ancestry claims this is spelled Henry H Hamand, but looking at the census document, it is clearly Hammond. The Hammond Genealogy book indicates that their two sons full names are Henry Foster and Clarence Arthur. [1]

In the 1880 US Census, Henry and his wife are living in West Windsor, with their two children. [8]

Note: The Hammond Genealogy book indicates that the last, youngest son full name is Carl Wade Hammond. [1] Note that Foster is missing from this list, even though he would only be 15 year old in this census.

Henry died in West Windsor, June 23, 1897 of acute hepatitis, aged 66 years, 9 months, and 18 days. [9]

He was buried in Brownsville Cemetery. [10]

  • Note: Birthdates on these gravestones do not appear to match the age on death certificate nor the the dates for both spouses given in the Hammond Genealogy Book.
