Biography

Susanna Artemisa Hammond was born July 15, 1828, in Vermont, USA. Her parents were Faunce Hammond and Clarissa Thompson. ^[1]

On October 15, 1854, she married Joel Washington Chaffee (who was born in Roxbury, Vermont, USA, August 25, 1834) in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.^[1]

“The burial services of the Ladies of the Grand Army will be given by Shiloh Circle, No. 19, L. of G. A. R., at the parlors of the Skewes Undertaking Company, corner Third and Clay, today (Wednesday, February 19) at 2 P.M. Friends are kindly invited to attend.”

“At the conclusion the body will be placed in the private vaults of the Skewes establishment for future shipment to Denver, Colo.”

“AGED WOMAN DIES AT SANDY. - Mrs. Susanna Chaffee, aged 84 years, died Monday at her home in Sandy, OR, and the body has been brought to Portland. The funeral was held from Skewes chapel yesterday. The body will be sent to Denver, Colo. Services were under the auspices of Shiloh Circle, No. 19. Woman of the Grand Army, of which she was a member.”
