Biography

Eliza Hammond was baptised in Manchester Cathedral on 6 November 1803, the daughter of John Hammond and Sarah Probart. She appears to have had one sister, Sarah, baptised on 17 June 1798, also at Manchester Cathedral, who remained unmarried.

In the 1851 census of Holt, Eliza was a landed proprietor and widow age 47 born in Manchester, living with William H 22 mariner, Mary Ann 17, Sarah 13, Samuel P 12, and Edward L 10, all born at Holt.

Eliza died at Conduit Vale, Greenwich and was buried at Holt, a good wife and mother, loved and respected by all . "Jones April 5th (1865), at the residence of her son Capt. Jones, Conduit Vale, Blackheath, West Greenwich, Kent, Eliza, relict of the late Edmund William Jones, Holt, Denbighshire, niece of the late John Aldersley Probart, Esq., Kidnal, Cheshire. Deeply lamented by her numerous family and friends aged 62 years. " [The Australasian, 1 July 1865] [d.cert] She left no will. No marriage found in Holt, Manchester or Chester. Try Tattenhall? "Funeral of the late Mrs Edmund Jones.- On Sunday, when the minister had dismissed the Congregation after the morning service, they were surprised to find at the Church gates a hearse and two mourning coaches, the former bearing the remains of Eliza, relict of the late Edmund Jones of Holt. Her eldest son, Captain Jones, of the "Far East," merchant ship, and a younger brother with six more relatives, formed the funeral cortege. Four of her other sons being in Australia, great sympathy was felt by the inhabitants and spectators. The body was brought by Captain Jones to Holt for interment according to the wishes of his departed parent. The deceased died at Greenwich, near London. Her last resting place is now near her departed husband and the other relicts of her family. ""Jones April 5th (1865), at the residence of her son Capt.
