OBITUARY. On June 28th there passed away at his residence, Woodbury, a very old and respected resident, Mr George Hammond, in his 85th year. Born in Devonshire, Mr Hammond came to New Zealand in 1864, at the age of 15 years, in the ship “Ivanhoe,” under engagement to the late Mr C. H. Tripp, of Orari Gorge, where he worked for a number of years. Later Mr Hammond worked as a contractor and mill owner till 1898, when he went to the “Waihi Estate,” to Mr J. M. Barker, for whom he worked for sixteen years, when he was compelled through ill health to give up many of his former activities. Spending all his time in and around Woodbury, he always took a very active part in all matters pertaining to the parish. He was one of the earliest members of St. Thomas’s Church, was for many years churchwarden, and also a member of the choir. In 1874 Mr Hammond married Miss Eva Dean, a daughter of the late Mr Joseph Dean, of Woodbury. One daughter, Mrs Jack Fifield, of Woodbury, predeceased him, and he is survived by his widow and five sons and four daughters:—Messrs Geo. Hammond (Four Peaks); L. Hammond (Hastings), P. Hammond (Napier), A. Hammond (Christchurch), H. Hammond (Rangiora), and Mesdames R. Dalziel (Rangiora), H. Maister (Geraldine), W. H. Cartwright (Leeston), and J. Timmins (Timaru). The funeral of the late Mr Hammond was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The Rev. Mr Coursey and the Rev. E. Blakiston conducted the services at St. Thomas’s, Woodbury, and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were five sons and a son-in-law. Mr J. Fifield.[1]
