Joseph Kaye Hampshire was born at Goulburn in 1889.[1] He was the son of Edward Hampshire and Ellen Brook.
Joseph enlisted on the 5th of August, 1915 and served in the 4th Battalion. At that time he was 25 years old and a carpenter. His military papers describe him as 5'11 1/2" tall, fair skinned, with grey eyes and fair hair. He was wounded on two occasions - in the knee in August 1916 and another injury in May 1917.[2][3]
Before returning to Australia, he married Dorothy Burrow on the 10th of September, 1919, in the parish church of St. Bride, Stretford, Lancaster.[2] She returned to Australia with him on the steamship Megantic in 1920.[4]
He died on the 3rd of August, 1956.[5]
