Biography

Fred was born in the family house in Agnes Street Rockhampton, now demolished. The family moved to Shandon Hill, Mt Morgan after the death of his father, Alfred Howard Hampson to live with Grandfather Gowdie who was Paymaster at Mt Morgan Gold Mining Company. Primary education was at Mt Morgan Boys Central School and he completed Junior at Mt Morgan High school. He undertook teacher training then taught at Walter Hall State School and Mt Morgan Central State School. He taught myself in Grade 4 and had the reputation as a stern but kindly teacher that got good marks for his pupils. Fred's love of gardening showed when he would take his class to weed the garden beds at the front entrance to the school. He taught at this school for over 30 years. He volunteered for the Australian Army in 1940 and was based for some time in Brisbane in an administrative role. He resumed teaching after being demobbed, assumed to be in 1945. Fred and his sister Meg shared many annual holidays in Yeppoon and Fred built up a large seashell collection from his daily walks along the beach. He was the proud owner of a Ford Prefect around 1950 that he lent to his brother Jack occasionally. Fred's later cars were a Morris Major and an Austin 1100. In later years his health suffered with stomach ulcers and a detached retina that limited his eyesight. Fred was a devout Anglican and attended services every week at St Marys Church of England and he only missed when they were away or for health problems. He continued to live in Shandon Hill with Meg after he retired until they both moved to a retirement home in Gracemere and then into the John Canni Home next to the Catholic Church in Mt Morgan.
