Biography

John Hampson was born in 1856 in Manchester, Lancashire.

In the 1861 census John was living with his parents William and Mary Ann Hampson at 10 Dickinson Street, Manchester. He was aged 5 years. [RG9/2964 58 Pg 3]

In 1871 John was living with his widowed mother at 2 Monsall Street, Manchester. Aged 15, he was working as an office boy. [RG10/4051 55 Pg 16]

John Hampson married Mary Jane Albinson on 1 September 1877 at St. Paul’s Church, Hulme. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a bachelor aged 21 and a manager's clerk. His father was named as William Hampson, a shopkeeper. Mary was a spinster aged 20. Her father was named as Joshua Albinson, a traveller. At the time of their marriage John was living at 2 Monsall St and Mary at 108 Embden St. Their witnesses were Joseph Hampson and Elizabeth Hanneth[?].

This couple had three known children named John William born 1878, Mary Ann born 1880 and Albert born 1884. All three were baptised on 3 October 1888 at St. Luke's Church, Miles Platting, Manchester [FamilySearch].

In the 1881 census John and Mary were residing at Church Lane, Wilton Pl, Moston, Lancashire. John, aged 25, was a metal traveller. Mary was aged 24, son John aged 3 and daughter Mary aged 6 months. [RG11/4029 51 Pg 13]

In 1891 the family was living at 68A Lewis St, Newton, Manchester. John, aged 35, was then a tea merchant's traveller. Mary was aged 34. Children John, Mary and Albert were aged 13, 10 and 6 years respectively. [RG12/3254 114 Pg 16]

In 1901 the family was living at 43 Sanderson St, Monsall, Manchester. John, aged 45, was a oil merchant's traveller. Mary was aged 44. Son John, aged 23, was a warehouse clerk. Mary, aged 20, was a men's cloth maker and Albert, aged 16, was an accountant's clerk. [RG13/3753 67 Pg 20 and 68 Pg 21]

John Hampson died in 1904 aged 48 years. He was buried at Philips Park Cemetery on 17 March 1904 [Section L Consecrated, Grave 20], with his maternal aunt Elizabeth Brickles nee Fox. The burial register recorded John was aged 48 years and a metal broker. His address was 153 Culcheth Lane, Newton, Manchester.

In 1911 Mary was residing at 98 Junction St, Harpurhey, Manchester. She was aged 54. Son Albert, aged 26, was a clerk for a motor car manufacturer.

Mary Jane Hampson died in 1916 aged 59 years. She was buried on 9 November at Southern Cemetery with her sisters Ada Edith [sic] Fanny Hutchinson and Julia Hurst [Section II, later amended to H Consecrated, Grave 2411]. The burial register recorded Mary was a widow aged 59. Her address was 98 Junction St, Miles Platting.
