Biography

Joan de Hampton was the daughter and co-heir (with her sister Alice) of Warren de Hampton, lord of Ashe, and his wife Phillipa de Orwey.

Born: Say 1425.

Rough estimate based on marriages and birth of first child in 1449.

Marriages and Children

Married: 1st - John Bonville. This marriage is given in Vivian's Visitation of Devon. There is no evidence found to support the marriage of Joan Hampton to any John Bonville, and it is likely this is another Vivian error.

Married: 2nd - John Sacheville about 1448 (based on birth of child in 1449). They had three daughters who were his co-heirs. John died 24 March 1473.

Married: 3rd - John Farringdon after 1485.

Children of John Sacheville and Joan de Hampton:

1. Joan Sacheville. Born about 1449 (age 24 in 1473). She married John Copleston III “of Exeter”. Joan died 20 October 1502 at which time her younger son Henry was her heir.
2. Sibyl Sacheville. Born about 1452 (age 21 in 1473). Named in her father's IPM in 1473, but not in her mother's IPM in 1489.
3. Julia Sacheville. Born about 1455 (age 18 in 1473). She married William Wilford of Oxton.

Death

Died: 28 April 1489.

IPM of Joan late wife of John Sachevyle esq.^[1]

held at Exeter 12 October 1489 records, (Nat Arch Ref: C Series II, vol 5 (28), Writ 8 May 4 HVII (1489)).:

“Joan late wife of John Sachevyle esq., deceased was seised in her demesne as of fee of a tenement in Exeter, held of Richard, Bishop of Exeter, by fealty, worth by the year clear 20s. Julia Wylfford aged 30 and more is one of her daughters, and is next heir. Kinsman and other heir, Richard Copleston aged 18, son of Joan, another daughter of the said Joan Sachevyle”

Note Richard is an error for Henry Copleston born c.1473 who was the heir of Joan Copleston.

IPM: of husband John Sacheville:

John Sachevylle died 24 March 1472/3, and his IPM held at Chepyngtoriton (Great Torrington) 12 June 1473, records “Joan Copleston age 24, wife of John Copleston, Sybil Sachevyle age 21 and Julia Sachevyle age 18, daughters and heirs”, (Nat Arch Ref: C 140/43/8).^[2]

Research Notes

Visitation error - mother of children: Vivian's Visitation of Devon states that the mother of John Farringdon's son and heir John was Joan Hampton.^[3] However, John Farringdon could not have married Joan before 1473 and their son could not have been born before 1474. This seems unlikely though not impossible given John the son was married before 1490. The primary problem is Joan's heirs in her IPM were her daughters with no mention of a son John Farringdon. John de Farringdon's children must have been by a previous wife.^[4] Furthermore Joan was sued for £40 debt in 1485 at which time she is still called Joane Sachwvyle widow sometime wife of John Sachevyle, so she had not remarried as of 1485.^[5]
