Capel was the son of Quakers John Hanbury and Elizabeth Bell. He was born at Tottenham, Middlesex on 14 October 1791. His father is described as a brewer in the birth record of Tottenham Quaker Monthly Meeting.[1][2]
Capel married Ellen Franklin at Marylebone, London. The parish register of St Marylebone, London gives the date as 8 June.[3] So too does a report of the marriage in the Gentleman's Magazine gives it as 8 June. It describes him as of the Royal Scots, and her as daughter of the late William Franklin, former Governor of New Jersey.[4] This was a Church of England wedding, suggesting that Capel was no longer a Quaker. This appears to the confirmed by their daughter Maria being baptised. They had at least one child:
Maria, baptised at St Paul's, Covent Garden, London on 24 January 1828, with her birth date given as 23 June 1820[5][6]
Research Notes
Mariage Date
The database "England Marriages 1538-1973" gives Capel's marriage date as 24 May:[7] this is incorrect, as the parish register cited above proves. 24 May was the first of the Sundays on which banns for the marriage were read out in church.[8]
