Joseph Howell's wife and children were killed by Indians during attack in August 1840, which was widely reported at the time. Note: Reports of the incidents vary as to the number of children who were killed by Indians, for example, news articles report that the wife and two children were killed, but according to "Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives: The Florida Reminiscences of George Gillett", only three out of Howell's 9 children survived.
