Biography

Cross of St George
Harriet (Hancock) Jagger was born in England.

Harriet Hancock was born in 1836 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Hancock and Hannah Mitchell [1].

She emigrated from England to Australia with her parents and siblings on board the Wallace, arrived 27 November 1841, ship 860 ton Capt Andrew Maine master, from Liverpool 18 August 1841 to Port Phillip in 100 days [2]. The family was shown as Thomas 34, Hannah 32, Sarah 12, Catherine 10, John 7, Harriet 5, Betty 2.

The family then made their way to New Zealand, probably on the ship Bellena, where after a time her father Thomas bought the Captain Cook Inn in Khyber Pass, Auckland from Roach in 1859 with a mortgage of £3000, and started brewing beer for his own use in sheds at the back of his hotel. Within three years, he had established his brewery as a commercial venture.

Harriet married Samuel Jagger on 2 September 1868 in Remuera, Auckland and had three children. They had a double wedding with Harriet's sister Mary which was reported in the papers.

A Double Wedding - Daily Southern Cross 2nd October 1868 page 8:

On September 2nd at Remuera by the Rev. Mr. Heywood, Mr. Samuel Jaggar to Harriet, third daughter of Mr. Thomas Hancock. No cards.

On September 2nd at Remuera by the Rev. Mr. Heywood, Mr. William Easdown, to Mary, sixth daughter of Mr. Thomas Hancock. No cards [3].

Sadly her husband passed away in 1890 at the age of 50.

Two years later Harriet passed away aged 56 years while on a trip to Sydney, Australia and she is buried in the Purewa cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand [4].
