Biography

Charles Hancock was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Charles Brent Hancock was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, 23 Dec 1823. He was a son of Solomon Hancock (1793-1847) and Alta (Adams; 1795-1836).

Charles Brent Hancock was a Private, Company "C" in the Mormon Battalion [1], which was commissioned by the United States government to venture to the desert region of the western territory east of California, thus to act as a "buffer" against contested boundaries with Mexico in context of the American-Mexican War. Their principal objective was to secure the Arizona Strip, mainly all lands north of the Colorado River that were not previously occupied by Euro-American settlers.

Charles Brent Hancock married first, 10 Mar 1850, Samantha Priscilla Rawson (1830 - 1854), with whom he had three children:

He married second, 14 Feb 1855 to Malinda Melissa Crockett, daughter of Lydia (Young; 1812-1888) & David Crockett (1806-1876). Their children were:

Charles Brent Hancock married (contemporaneously) 14 Feb 1857 at Salt Lake City, Utah, Chloe Ann Rawson (1836 - 1901; sister of his first wife), with whom he had several children, including but not limited to:

  • Charles William Hancock (1859-1930); married 1) Emmaretta Bingham; 2) Mary S. Curtis
  • Daniel R Hancock (1862–1896)
  • Eliza Jane Hancock (1875–1915); married Elisha John Thomas

Charles Brent Hancock married (synchronously) 14 Feb 1857 at Salt Lake City, Utah, Rachel Melinda Moore (1841 - 1913), with whom he had children, including but not limited to:

  • Melinda Jane Hancock (1859–1928); married 1) Horace Franklin Rawson; 2) Solomon Hancock

The combined family resided in 1860 in Payson, Utah [2], in which record Charles B. Hancock was described as a miller.

Charles Brent Hancock passed away in 1904 in Harrisville, Utah [3]. His grave is in Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Weber County, Utah, USA [4].
