Biography
George Robert Hancock was born during the second quarter (April-May-June) of 1842 in Tavistock, Devon, England.[1] His parents were George Hancock and Sarah Lipson.
The 1851 England Census shows him (age 8) living with several aunts and uncles - including Richard Lipson (age 57), Ann Lipson (age 47), and Maria Lipson (age 44) - on Leigh Farm in Bere Ferres, Devon.[2] Also enumerated in the household are his younger sister, Sarah (age 6); four servants (Mary Bishop, Josiah Noreatt, Henry Pike, James Williams), and a visitor named James Webb. His mother, Sarah, was living in Horrabridge with his two oldest siblings, Henry and Mary Jane (ages 14 and 12 respectively).
The 1861 England Census shows George Hancock living as a boarder in the household of John and Grace Waters in Tavistock, Devon.[3] He is said to be 18 years old, born in Horrabridge, and working as a Carpenter.
George Robert Hancock married Maria Heard Jackson during the second quarter (April-May-June) of 1867.[4] That same year, they migrated to Melbourne, Australia.[5]
After his wife's death in 1877, George took his children back to Devon.[6] They returned to Australia at the end of 1878.[7]
In 1884, he married his second wife, Elizabeth Barbour.[8] They had one son: Ralph Stanley Hancock - (1885-1982)
He died on 3 October 1887 in Newbridge, Victoria.[9]
