Biography

Studied law, and was admitted to the bar in Somerset County, Maryland in 1836; removed to Madisonville, Mississippi and entered private practice. Was elected Justice of the Mississippi High Court of Errors and Appeals (later the Supreme Court) from 1853 and Chief Justice from c. 1860-1867; professor of law at the University of Maryland, 1867-1871. Appointed secession commissioner to Maryland by Mississippi governor John J Pettus; he failed to get a hearing from the Maryland legislature.
