Biography

Vera Verna Haney was born December 8, 1901 in Nichols, Muscatine County, Iowa. She was the daughter of David Nathaniel Haney & Martha Jane Bosley Haney.

In May, 1910, Vera Verna Haney was attending school and living with her family in a rented house at 602 N. Sixth Avenue in Washington, Washington County, Iowa. Her father was employed as a railroad bridge foreman. Enumerated in the household were:

On January 29, 1914, Vera Verna Haney's father, David Nathaniel Haney purchased a house at 702 E. 7th Street, Washington, Iowa, from Mabel E. Butler.

In January, 1920, Vera Verna Haney was living with her family in a house at 201 E. 7th Street in Washington, Washington County, Iowa. Her father was employed as a railroad bridge foreman. Enumerated in the household were:

In 1920, Vera Verna Haney visited her cousin Ona Elbertha Forester in Grundy County Missouri, who was dating a young man from Sullivan County, Missouri, Ennis LeRoy Shaw. During her visit, Vera Verna Haney went on a double-date with Ennis LeRoy Shaw's 2nd cousin, Alva Erwin “Alvie” Franklin. At the end of the evening, they switched partners.

Ona Elbertha Forester married Alva Erwin “Alvie” Franklin in Sullivan County on September 27, 1920.

Because an illness had forced Vera Verna Haney to miss a year of school, she didn't graduate until May, 1922, when she was 20 years old.

Vera Verna Haney married Ennis LeRoy Shaw in her family's home in Washington, Iowa on August 10, 1922. He was the son of George Herman Shaw & Anna Elizabeth Sevier.

David Nathaniel Haney died of apoplexy on March 6, 1928 in Washington, Washington County, Iowa. He was 67 years old. He was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

By July of 1928, "Mrs. Martha Haney and sons, Kenneth and Phillip, have gone to Topeka, Kansas., to make their home. Son Frank Earl Haney was living in Topeka in 1924 working as a Signal Supervisor for the railroad." (Davenport Democrat at Leader, Monday, 30 Jul 1928)

In April, 1930, Vera Verna Haney & Ennis LeRoy Shaw were living in her mother's house in Washington, Washington County, Iowa, paying her mother $12.00/month. Ennis LeRoy Shaw worked as a shipping clerk at the American Pearl Button Factory in Washington. Enumerated in the household were:

Ennis LeRoy Shaw's widowed mother Anna Elizabeth Sevier Shaw, his brother Von Herman Shaw & his wife Myrtle Naomi Page Shaw, his brother Gerald Arthur Shaw, and, at some point Mary Bertha Shaw Maxwell & husband Stanley Duane Maxwell also moved to Washington, Iowa, living in a rented house at 709 1/2 South Iowa Avenue.

In April, 1940, Vera Verna Haney & Ennis LeRoy Shaw were living in Washington, Washington County, Iowa at 702 E. 7th Street, which belonged to Vera Verna Haney's mother. They paid her $10.00/month rent. Ennis LeRoy Shaw was still employed as a shipping clerk at the American Pearl Button Factory in Washington. Enumerated in the household were:

Ennis LeRoy Shaw's grandfather, James Washington Sevier, died October, 1940, he left two farms to his daughter, Anna Elizabeth Sevier Shaw. In October, 1941, the entire family moved back to Sullivan County.

Vera Verna Haney & Ennis LeRoy Shaw farmed in Sullivan County until he suffered a heart attack in the summer of 1950. Following the graduation of their youngest son, James Allen Shaw, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Since Ennis couldn't work, Vera worked at Research Hospital in the Dietary Department.

Ennis Leroy Shaw died of heart disease on February 19, 1965 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He was 63 years old. He was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Pleasant Hill township, Sullivan, Missouri, USA

Vera returned to Milan in 1970, purchasing a house at 414 E. 5th Street, where she lived until her death on January 31, 1990. She was 88 years old. She was buried with her husband in Mount Zion Cemetery in Pleasant Hill township, Sullivan, Missouri, USA.
