Biography

Mrs. L. P. Dean Is Called

Worthy Pioneer Answers the Final Summons at the Age of Eighty-Six Years.

On Friday evening, Nov. 5, 1915, at 7:30 o’clock, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Sheboygan Falls, Mrs. L. P. Dean, died at her home in this city at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 10 days, following an illness of four years, the last six months of which she was confined to the house.

Mary Elizabeth Hanford was born at Brighton, N. Y., March 26, 1829, the daughter of James and Catherine Hanford. In 1847 she came with her parents to Wisconsin and Sheboygan Falls and two years later on March 8, 1849 was married to Leonard P. Dean. Eleven children were born of this union, seven of whom survive: Dighton, Henry, Philo and Maurice of Sheboygan Falls; Alvanus of Tomahawk, Wis.; and Sarah (Mrs. Adam Demand) and Helen (Mrs. Frank F. Kalk) of Sheboygan Falls. Mr. Dean died on October 12, 1898, and since then Mrs. Dean and her son Maurice have lived together at the old home on the east side of the river. During her last sickness her daughter, Mrs. Demand was with her. She is also survived by a brother, John Hanford of Sheboygan, and a sister, Mrs. Mercy Hanford of Minneapolis; also sixteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Mrs. Dean was a kind, loving, Christian woman, who had endeared herself to the community in general, and was loved most by those who knew her best. Optimistic in all her views, witty to a decided degree and always cheerful, many were the silver linings she had pointed out in the overhanging clouds. All through her long illness she had never once complained, and her fortitude during her hours of pain demonstrated a constitution worthy of the mighty. To say that she will be missed, only inadequately expresses the vacancy made by the hand of the Grim Reaper.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock from the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a devoted and consistent member, The Rev. F. F. Parsons of West Allis and Rev. R. H. Pratt of this city officiating. Interment was made in the Falls cemetery, at twilight in compliance with a wish of the deceased.

The attendance at the funeral services was unusually large, the main auditorium, the vestibule and the rear room of the church being filed to overflowing. The floral offerings were elaborate and beautiful.

The pall bearers were: Frank Feruer, Albert Kuehn, Wm. Kutzbach, Albert Osterhuis, Chas. A. Wachter and Ira Hopkins. - Sheboygan County News, Nov. 10, 1915
