William Edgar Hankins was born 7 Apr 1864 in Mifflin Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, the son of Thomas Hankins and Elmina Haner. Both of his parents died when he was only 11 years old, and he was then taken into the care of his uncle, William B. Haner. On 27 Dec 1887, at age 23, William married Sarah Ann Hemmerly, and together they had eight children.
Their youngest daughter, Zelda Bernice, was only 16 months old when her mother died, 18 Jul 1909. She was then raised by her mother's twin sister, Mary Ann Tuttle.
After his wife died, William did not remarry. He died twenty-nine years later, on 4 Jun 1938, and is buried with his wife and two infant children at Jackson Center Cemetery, Wyandot County, Ohio.
