Biography

"Joseph Hankinson, born March 27, 1712, died Sept 12, 1783, removed to Rowlands Mills, Hunterdon Co., N.J., will dated July, 1783; he and his wife are buried in the Vorris-Hankinson yard; have markers.... [Joseph married] Rachel Mattison, born Nov 26, 1707, died March 28, 1784, married Feb 15, 1732."[1]

Joseph Hankinson joined the Old Tennent Church and was baptized with his son Thomas.

"Joseph Hankinson & Thomas, his son, bap. Feb. 24, 1734: The father having made a public profession of his faith : Aaron, Apr 4, 1736; William, Nov. 27, 1737; Anne, Mar. 11, 1739 ; John and Joseph, after his Removal to Readington, Oct. 19, 1746."[2]


Death and Legacy

Abstract of will[3]

"1783, July 27. Hankinson, Joseph of Reading Township, Hunterdon Co.; will of. Wife, Rachel, to be provided for by my sons, John and Joseph. Eldest son, Thomas, £5. Sons, Aron and William, the lands they now possess, which they have by deeds. Grandchildren, Lyddia and Aron Buscark, £1500. Daughter, Elizabeth, wife of John Reading, £700. Sons, John and Joseph, rest of real and personal estate. Executors--sons, Thomas and John. Witnesses--Charles Reading, Montgomery Reading, Joseph Atkinson. Proved April 27, 1784.
"1784, April 7. Inventory, £428.6.8, made by Thomas Reading and Charles Reading. Lib. 26, p. 180."

Joseph Hankinson is buried in the Hankinson Cemetery in Readington.[4]

Hankins-754 and Hankinson-235 appear to represent the same person because: I believe that the differences in the Last names is a result of the time and place of birth, New Sweden and the patronomic nameing system that was in effect. I have requested a look-see by the G2G into this matter.
