Excerpt from The Hanks Family of Virginia and Westward by Adin Baber THE FIRST HANKS OF RECORD John Hanks came up from below decks of the sailing vessel, away from the stench of the constant bilge, as her sails were lowered and furled, and gazed upon this Faire Land, the land of "In the Beginning" for the Hanks family of America.

Just so he came to Jamestown. Within a few years he patented 200 acres of land, as is the record in the very first Patent Book of the Colony of Virginia.* Other Hanks followed.

  • The Shipley Ancestry of Lincoln's Mother.

By LOUIS A. WARREN. Reverence for the burial places of those making significant contributions to our national life has placed upon Indiana the responsibility of preserving and beautifying the grave of the mother who gave Abraham Lincoln to America. It is doubtful if there is to be found in all the country a lone woman's grave which has become so sacred a shrine as the grave of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The commonwealth of Indiana is now awakened to its full responsibility as the custodian of her remains.

  • Joseph Hanks.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Joseph Hanks (1725–1793) was the great-grandfather of United States President Abraham Lincoln. It is generally accepted that Joseph was the father of Lucy Hanks, the mother of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. There is also a theory that Joseph and his wife, Ann ("Nannie"), had a son named James who married Lucy Shipley, sired Nancy Hanks, but died before Lucy and Nancy came to Kentucky. Joseph Hanks' children and grandchildren figure prominently in Abraham Lincoln's youth. [4]
