Biography

Fielding was born in 1783. He was the son of Abraham Hanks and Sarah Harper. He died in 1861. [1]

Fielding Hanks (also "Fielden") was born around 1784[2] to Abraham Hanks and Sarah Harper,[3] probably in Campbell County, Virginia, the family having recently returned from Kentucky.[4]

Adin Baber appears to be the first to publish the theory that Abraham and Sarah, Fielding's parents, died when Fielding was a minor,[5] and that Fielding was subsequently raised to his age of majority back in Kentucky in the area of Slate Creek or Harper's station, by his (perhaps half-) uncle John Harper and family.[6]

In 1806, Baber finds Fielding, who would have been about 22 years old, in the Montgomery County, Kentucky tax list[7]

Some time in or before that year, Fielding must have married Lydia Harper, the daughter of his probable half-uncle, John Harper and his wife Mary Ann,[8] for Fielding and Lydia's first child, Jordon Hanks (also spelled Jourden, Jordan)[9] is said to have been born some time in between 1804 and 1806.[citation needed], after whom came William Hanks (b. 1807).[10]

It is interesting to note that the 1810 census shows Fielding's home including more than just the two parents and two children, and it is not clear who the other adults and children in the home are, but they may be Hanks or Harper relatives.[11]

Children Anna ("Annie", b. abt. 1811),[12] and Lucinda (b. abt. 1813)[13] followed.

Fielding Hanks enlisted for a two-month period in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Infantry and served as a Corporal under Major Peter Dudley from 20 September 1814 to 20 November 1814.[14][15]

Also in 1814, Fielding and Lydia's next child, Cuthbert Million Hanks was born.[16], then followed Andrew Jackson Hanks (b. 1817)[17] and George S. (b. abt. 1817).[18]

In 1818,[citation needed] Fielding and family moved to the Camp Towne settlement (now Campton, Wolfe County, Kentucky), which at the time was still a nascent mining camp. It is said that the home Fielding built was the first permanent structure in the settlement.[citation needed]

Again in 1820, the census, showing that Camp Towne was at that time in Floyd County,[19] has people in the home unaccounted for (there are 11 but we account for only 9).

The last of their children were Nancy (b. abt. 1821),[20] Louisa (b. abt. 1824),[21] and perhaps Lydia (rumored to have been born in 1825 and married a man named Meadows).[citation needed]

Fielding and his wife Lydia lived the rest of their lives in Campton.[22][23], in later years with their son Cud's family[24] and their deceased son George's family, the Wiremans.[2] It seems from what passed down to some of his descendants that he loved drinking and hunting.[25]

They both died in 1861,[3] and were buried in the Old Campton Burying Ground. Campton would go on to become the county seat of Wolfe County when it was founded, in no small part due to the work of Fielding's son Cud to establish the new county.
