He passed away in 1931.[3] His Obituary appeared as follows:[4]
MR. T. C. HANKS
Mr. Thomas C. Hanks, who died at his residence in Newcastle-street, East Maitland, was born and had lived all his life of 75 years in the town.
He was a man of quiet retiring nature, and of a most kindly disposition. Although he never took any part in public affairs, every deserving cause found in him a sympathetic and willing helper. It was in connection with his church that his activities found their full expression. He was a most loyal member of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, a liberal supporter of its schemes and an untiring worker in its interests. For many years he was a member of the Board of Management, and later was elected to the eldership, in which capacity he represented his church on the Presbytery of the Hunter at the time of his death.
Mr. Hanks was also chosen by St. Stephen's congregation as lts representative on the Board of Trustees for the Presbyterian cemetery, and Glebe property in West Maitland. In connection with the latter, his practical knowledge and sound commonsense were of great value and were much appreciated by his fellow members on the board. Whatever work he undertook — whether great or small— he did willingly, faithfully and well.
Mr. Hanks was employed by Pender Bros. Ltd., for a number of years. In March of last year he and Mrs. Hanks celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding. The esteem in which Mr. Hanks was held by a very wide circle of friends was clearly evidenced by the great number who showed their respect by their presence at his funeral on Saturday afternoon. The interment (sic) was made in the Presbyterian cemetery at East Maitland. Revs. Alex. Smith arid D. Finlayson conducted services at the house and the cemetery. Rev. Hilton Thomas was also present. Bro. H. Allsop read the burial service of the Protestant Alliance Society. Four relatives acted as pall-bearers.
