Biography

Loyd was born in West Garafraxa Township, Ontario.
When he signed up for service in the First World War on Jan. 24, 1916, his address was Belwood, Ontario and the attestation papers were signed in Fergus. He was listed as a farmer and his birth date was given as Dec. 24, 1898. He was described as 5 ft. 5 in. in height with a medium dark complexion. Apparently he served for six months; he was drafted for service again on May 4, 1918 with the 1st Depot Battalion Saskatchewan Regiment and on that attestation form he listed six months service with the 153rd Infantry Battalion. In 1918 Loyd’s address was Richardson Station, Saskatchewan and his father’s (Thomas Lochlin [sic] Hanna) address was Fergus, Ontario.^[1]
Loyd worked for Carl Webster in Estlin, Saskatchewan for the summer of 1919; Carl became his brother-in-law later that year. In 1920, 1921 and 1922 Loyd and his brother, Arnold, rented ¾ section from Clare Kyle^[2]. He rented the Russell Smith farm in 1923 and lived there until 1944.^[3] Loyd brought his father out west in the early 1920s; Tom had been hurt in a gravel pit accident and was crippled.
Loyd was active in the Orange Lodge and was one of the group that helped build the Richardson Hall.7 He was a founding member and shareholder of the Richardson Co-operative Assoc. which was incorporated in 1942 and dissolved in 1953^[4].
He moved to Stony Beach where he lived and farmed until he died. Loyd never married.
