Biography

Mary Helen Salvaggio, 88, of Kansas City, MO passed away Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Villages of Jackson Creek Memory Care surrounded by her loving family. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 11th, at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 8001 Longview Road Kansas City, MO 64134. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Passantino Bros. Funeral Home, 2117 Independence Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64124, where the Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews Church prior to Mass. The family suggests contributions to Little Sisters of the Poor; St. Matthews Parish; Crossroads Hospice; or a charity of your choice.

Mary Helen was born August 28, 1923 in Kansas City, MO. She was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Westport High School. Mary Helen married Sam Salvaggio on February 28, 1949 following his return from Korea. It was their dream to open a business and, in 1956, they opened Wimpey Burger and worked together for 37 years.

Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband Sam Salvaggio; her parents Jim and Ella Hannan; and her brother Jimmie Hannan.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Hannan; nieces and nephews, Patricia and Carl Distefano, Janet and Phil Schneider and family, Mary Ellen and Keith Fugate and family. They were at her side faithfully every day. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Nick Salvaggio; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sally Meehan, Ann Byrne, Jennie and Charlie Greenway, Clara and John Zans; uncles and aunts, Johnny and Esther McMurray, Eddie and Vince McMurray; and many nieces, nephews and cousins who all have wonderful memories of precious times with her.

Mary Helen was a member of the Silver Threads at St. Matthews Church and enjoyed a special group of ladies, Pat Shipley, Rosie Burns, Bonnie Davis and Jeanette Waggner, who loved her very much. She also volunteered at Little Sisters of the Poor, St. James Soup Kitchen, and all church functions. This kind and generous lady is loved by everyone and will be missed by all.

The family would like to thank Crossroads Hospice, especially Paula and Jezoura who were with her to the end. We also thank the Villages of Jackson Creek for their care.
