Border conflicts along the Old Ninety Six District and the Spartan Distric in SC and just over the NC border was rife at the time of the American Revolution. The hostilites with the indigenous Cherokee, who supported the Torries, had been building since the beginnings of the war. As a matter of course the British took advantage of the tensions and spurred the Cherokee to join them in doing a swath of raids along the borders of these two districts.
The William Hannon Family Farm was the last of the raids, and according to accounts, The Hannon's were working in the fields when the attack took place. Three of the children were able to escape after watching the horific attack, making their way, alone, to a neighboring farm to safety.[2][3]
