Karen Hansdatter Baad was born in Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway in about 1550, the daughter of Tønsberg merchant Hans Lauritsen Baad and Maren Clausdatter Nagell. She was married in about 1572 to Laurits Kristensen Lind, parish priest at Klepp. See his profile for a list of their children.
