Richard joined the award winning Cedar Falls Municipal Band in his freshman year (1941). This photo was taken by the Blue Line building, 2nd and Washington Streets.

He remained in the band until leaving for the Navy in 1945 then played a couple of concerts following the war. Richard played the tuba and his brother Russ played the flute. [7]

Richard L Hansen served 1 Aug 1945 Des Moines to 6 Jun 1946 USNTC Great Lakes Illinois and 3 Nov 1945 - 29 Apr 1946, Shoemaker, California, USS Neville APA 9.[11] [12]

"I attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Center. Assigned to APA 9, U.S.S. Neville, which took occupying troops into Japanese base on Truk Island and made port in Hollandia, New Guinea, and the islands of Guam and Manus. Closest I ever came to any guns was while taking troops to the surrender of the Jap's naval base at Truk. Passed through Panama Canal on way to Boston Naval Base, where ship was de-commissoned at end of World War II." -- Richard Hansen, 2006 [7]

On 7 June 1946, Richard L Hansen, just released from the Navy, registered for the World War II draft.[13]
On 6 May 1949, he applied for WW II bonus in Cedar Falls on 6 May 1949.[11]

Shortly after completing his Naval service, the Cedar Falls native returned home and earned a BA at Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI.) He later achieved an MS from Drake University and a Specialist in Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa.[14]

2013 DEATH AND BURIAL
Richard Hansen died 28 October 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa. [16][17]
He is buried with his wife Carol at Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County, Iowa.[18][19]

Richard Hansen Obituary

Richard LaVern Hansen, 86, of West Union, formerly of Elkader, passed away after a short illness on Oct. 28, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union. He was born July 27, 1927, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Oscar and Leah (Moore) Hansen.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Carol Jean (Twinam) Hansen; his parents; and a daughter-in-law, Wanda (Johnson) Hansen. He is survived by two sons... and a brother, Russell Hansen of Mesa, Ariz. Other survivors include five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, two nieces and several cousins.
Richard graduated from Cedar Falls High School, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and married Carol at the Little Brown Church in 1945. Following the war, he secured degrees from Iowa State Teachers College, Drake University, and the University of Northern Iowa, and devoted 40 years to education. He served as a teacher, high school principal, superintendent, special education director, county superintendent (Chickasaw and Fayette counties), and retired in 1989 as administrator of the Keystone Area Agency.
He was a member of the West Union United Methodist Church, the American Legion since World War II, the Lions and Rotary clubs, the Elkader and West Union Masonic lodges, West Union History and Literature Club, the National Education Association, and both the National and Iowa Association of School Administrators.
Richard passed on with deep appreciation for the many years of love and support provided by Carol and their sons. He was particularly proud of his sons' accomplishments and their families.
A service will be held at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, at 1 p.m. Nov. 2, with a visitation one hour before. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Good Samaritan Society, West Union, IA 52175. S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union is in charge of the arrangements.[20]
