Edmund was born about late 1851. He is the son of William Hanson and Catherine Pearson. [1]
At the age of eight he arrived in New Zealand on the Joseph Fletcher in 1859 with his mother and 5 siblings. Family say he didn't get on with his father and split around 1879.
Without the guidance and perhaps strict discipline of his father, Edmund appeared to lose his way in life. Drifting from place to place, from 1880 to 1886 newspapers report various instances of being in trouble with the law notably in Auckland, Tauranga, and Paeroa. Aliases used were Edward Hanson, Edward Anderson, and perhaps even Edward Martin. For example in Tauranga (April 1880). [2] .[3] The Paeroa Police Gazette in July 1886 "Edward Hansen, alias Anderson is charged on warrant..." "Description: a native of this colony, a carpenter, thirty-five years of age, 5ft 4&1/2in high, medium build, dark hair, dark complexion, cast in left eye, bracelet tattooed on right wrist, wore dirty cloth hat, white-and-blue-striped shirt, worn open, and watertight boots, no coat."
It is possible he then travelled to Australia. In December 1886 at Sydney an Edward Hanson was brought up on charges.
Edward Anderson is charged with offences in Timaru in 1890, and Christchurch in 1899. In Feb 1900 Edward 'Hansen' is convicted of breaking, entering and theft at Christchurch. [4]
1/ Possible death for Edward Hansen in 1914, 57yrs [bc1856] [5]
There is a death for Edward Anderson (April 1891 abt. 42yrs [bc1849] but mention of probate in the newspapers means this is unlikely.
