Biography

Richard de Harcourt was the son of William de Harcourt, Governor of Tamworth Castle, by his wife Alice Noel, heiress of Ellenhall.[1]

Sir Richard de Harcourt held Baddesley Ensor, Baxterley, Wolvey, Copston, Grandborough, & Wormeltighton, Warwickshire. His coat of arms was: "Or two bars gules"[2]

Sir Richard de Harcourt married Orabella de Quincy, daughter of Sir Saher de Quincy, Magna Carta Baron and 1st Earl of Wincester, before 1219. They had two sons (Sir William; & Saher) and one daughter (Margaret, wife of Sir John de la Haye).[3][4]

Sir Richard de Harcourt died shortly before 2 April 1258, when his son William did homage to the King and came into his lands:

"Richard made a third substantial acquisition for his family in the Staffordshire manor of Ellenhall, which came to him through marriage to Orabilia, daughter of Thomas Noel. [Mistake: Richard's mother was the daughter of Thomas Noel and heiress of Ellenhall.] He made careful arrangements for the succession to his lands, enfeoffing his younger son, Saher, with two Leicestershire manors, Kibworth and Newton Harcourt, in his own lifetime. He died early in 1258 leaving his brother, William, rector of Aylestone, as his executor, as appears from a later fine. His eldest son, Sir William [ii] de Harcourt (d. 1270), succeeded to the bulk of his estate, doing homage to the king for his manor of Stanton in April 1258." [5]

Children of Richard and Orabella:

  1. William (c. 1227-1271), eldest son and heir, m. (1) Alice Zouche; m. (2) Hilary Hastings; joined Simon Montfort against King Henry III.
  2. Saher, "who joined Simon Montfort, Earl of Leicester, against King Henry III, and being taken at the battle of Evesham, August 6th, 1266, died in confinement and disseised of his lands, the same year."[6]
  3. Margaret, m. Sir John de la Haye, who also joined Simon Montfort against King Henry III. They had two sons, but no living descendants.[7] Older sources don't include this daughter.
  4. ? Maud (not mentioned by Douglas Richardson), m. Sir Giles Peneston (per older secondary sources).
