He was on the 1850 and 1860 censuses with his mother and step father John Hardin in Washington County, Indiana.[1][2]
Ballard enlisted in the 81st Indiana infantry, Company A, as a private on 15 Aug 1862. He was killed at the battle of Chickamaugua in Georgia on 20 Sep 1863. His name is on the Washington county Veterans Memorial.[3]
On 6 Aug 1885, his mother Judith applied for a pension for his civil war service.[4]
