Biography

George Harding, son of Thomas & Ann, was baptised on 19 November 1738 in Great Horwood, Buckinghamshire, England.^[1]

George Harding (age 22), bachelor of Botclaydon^[2], married Sarah Burnhill (age 21), spinster of Padbury, by license, on 4 October 1758 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England. The witnesses were John Turnbull and Richard Quainton.^[3]

Their children included:

2. Mary Harding, daughter of George Harding & Sarah, was baptised on 3 February 1765 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[5]
3. William Harding, son of George Harding & Sarah, was baptised on 22 March 1766/7 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[6]
4. Ann Harding, daughter of George Harding & Sarah, was baptised on 22 January 1768/9 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[7]
5. John Harding, son of George Harding & Sarah, was baptised on 21 July 1771 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[8]
6. Thomas Harding, son of George Harding & Sarah, was baptised on 28 August 1774 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[9]

Research Notes

This George Harding is probably the one born in 1736, who married a Sarah Burnhill in 1758.^[10] who married a Sarah Burnhill on 4 October 1758.^[10]

This couple had at least one child, Ann.^[11]

There are several Ancestry trees that include a George Harding who married Sarah Burnhill, but I have not found adequately sourced parentage. This profile was originally listed as the son of Matthew Harding (1735-1780) and Elizabeth Medhurst (1732-1764), but according to their dates, they could not be the parents of the George who married Sarah Burnhill in 1758. I removed the parent links and updated the research notes in those profiles.

There is a George Hardin, son of a Matthew and Elizabeth Hardin who was christened in 1762, but not in Botolph, in Wiltshire. This cannot be the same George Harding.^[12]

Someone with more experience in English genealogy of that time and locale may be needed to clear this up…

Two different transcriptions of the date of his marriage have been found, but not the actual image. If he was 22 at marriage, this calls into question his birth year, which could be 5 years earlier than originally thought:

George Harding of East Claydon or Bottle Claydon, labourer, married Sarah Burneill on 7 October 1753 in Archdeaconry of Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, England.^[13]

The only possibility for his christening found on Findmypast, the one that has been assumed, is in Great Horwood, which is just 5 miles from East Claydon.

The death date of 1838 in Wiltshire has been removed since it is unsourced and since it would have made him 103, it is extremely unlikely to be him.

One possibility for his burial is George Harding who was buried on 1 September 1806 in Padbury, Buckinghamshire, England.^[14]
