On 16 Apr 1863, Charles, age 18, enlisted as a Private in the 9th. Michigan Calvary, in Coldwater, Michigan. He mustered out on 21 Apr 1865 in Lexington, North Carolina.^[3]

Charles, age 34, married Lydia (Lehman) Harding, age 22, on October 22, 1878, in Columbia, Michigan. ^[4]

They had one child during their marriage.

In 1880, Charles, age 35, resided with his family in Surrey, Clare, Michigan, USA^[5] In 1900, Charles, age 55, resided with his family in Greenwood, Clare, Michigan, USA^[6] In 1910, Charles, age 65, resided with his family in Greenwood, Clare, Michigan, USA^[7] In 1920, Charles, age 75, resided with his family in Redding, Clare, Michigan, USA^[8] Charles died on January 5, 1928, in Mason, Michigan, at the age of 83, and was buried in Twining, Michigan.^[9][10]
