Early Life

Henry Paul Mortimer Harding, born on March 17, 1886, in Johnson, Missouri,[1][2] was the youngest of two sons to his parents, John Jesse Harding and Mary Emma Thomas. His early years were spent in Montserrat, Johnson, Missouri, USA. At the age of 14, young Mort found work as a day laborer, although he endured four months of unemployment during that period. His brother Ralph shared a similar experience, both contributing to the family's well-being while their parents managed a farm. [3]

Appearance

Mort possessed a slender frame, complemented by dark hair and gray eyes.[2]

Marriage and Family

In the spring of 1904, Henry Mortimer Harding and Lillie Thomas joined in matrimony. [4] [5]The couple's early journey together was marked by the joy of welcoming two daughters. However, they also faced the heartache of losing their second daughter, Julia Ann Harding, at the tender age of five months in 1907.
By 1910, the Harding family was renting a farm in Montserrat, Missouri. Mort, now employed as a coal miner, encountered the challenge of nearly 24 weeks of unemployment during the year. Lillie tended to their young daughter and a son.[6] In 1913, another daughter, Fienettie Louise entered their lives, but tragically, she fell victim to cholera two years later.
In September 1918, when Mort registered for the World War Draft, he classified himself as a self-employed farmer, having transitioned away from his previous occupation in the coal mine..[2]
In 1920, Mort and Lillie were the proud owners of their farm, where they raised a bustling household of five children – three boys and two girls.[7] Throughout their marriage, the couple welcomed seven children into their home, with five flourishing into adulthood.

Death and Burial

Henry "Mort" Harding's life journey concluded on February 20, 1923, at the age of 36, a victim of pneumonia resulting from flu complications. His final resting place is in Ellis Cemetery, nestled in the heart of Johnson, Missouri.[8][9][10]
