John was the son of John Harwicke and Elizabeth Pinchbech. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Leek, esq. and Margaret Foxe. Of their six children, their daughter "Bess of Harwicke" is the best known ... but John did not live to see his her grow up, and died when she was only a year old.
While his daughters were left some money after his death, John was an "impoverished country gentlemen." Bess of Hardwick elevated her standing by taking a job as a woman in waiting in the home of the Zouche family, whose son Robert Barlow was an heir... and who would eventually marry Bess, but died a year after marriage.
