Biography

Margaret Hardy was born in 1844 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.^[1] She was the daughter of Isaac Hardy and Sarah Bates ^[2]

In 1851 she was living with her parents, siblings and grandmother at Derby Street, Great Bolton, Bolton, Lancashire. ^[2]

In 1861 and 1871 Margaret was living with her parents at a provision shop in Weston Street, Bolton. She was a cotton weaver. ^{[3] [4]}

Margaret's mother and father died in 1879 and 1880 respectively and Margaret took over the running of the shop. In 1881, she was living on the premises with her youngest brother Samuel who was an assistant schoolmaster. ^[5]

In 1891, aged 47 and still single, 7 of her nephews and nieces were living with her. ^[6]
