Biography

Ancestor of Jonathan Hopkinson Jr (Robert E Beeson).

"Robert Hardie of London is the first one of this name of whom we have definite record. He was called a 'citizen and haberdasher of London'. From the records of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers of London, England it appears that Robert was the son of John Hardie of Kirkby, Lonsdale, Westmoreland County. He was born in 1612, and in 1626 he was apprenticed, apparently by his father, to become a haberdasher."

Robert and Mary were the parents of four children: Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Samuel 1645-1700.

Mary married second Steven More, citizen and clothworker of London.

"The name Hardy is generally considered to be English, but there are reasons to believe the forebears were Norman, although they probably did not come to England until after the arrival of William the Conqueror, as the name does not appear in the Doomsday Book. It does appear in the Hundred Rolls in 1272, where it is spelled Hardi, the French spelling. However, the name has been quite conspicuous in English History. One line consisted of a long line of Naval heroes, and the author Thomas Hardy is well known."^[1]
