Biography

Jesse Hardy was born to Lemuel Hardy and Martha Patsy Mewborn Hardy, likely in Greene County, North Carolina.

On 17 Oct 1844, his father made a will in Greene Co. NC, which was proved in the November Term 1846. As the youngest child, Jesse poyentially received: Item 15- the property “lent” to wife, PATSY HARDY “be divided as near-equal between my five youngist (sic) children” when they reach lawful age or marry. Item 16- “If either of my three sons LEMUEL, BENJAMIN, or LEVI should die leaving no issue lawfully begotten of their bodys that my youngest son JESSE H. HARDY have the lots of land that I have set apart or given to them. (he then lists the changes he wants made depending on which of the three might die and how he wants the properties redistributed) [1]

Residence 1850: Greene County, North Carolina as Jessee H Hardy (12) in household of Patsey Hardy (56) with Louisa (22) Benjamin G (18) and Levi S (16). [2]

Marriage: 1855 to Martha Ann Stanton in Wilson County, North Carolina[3]

On 18 Jun 1860, J. H. Harday 23 & Marthay Harday [sic] 23 lived in Tyson's Marsh District, Greene NC, post office Snowhill, with daughter Marthay A. 2 and servant Patsy Hill 25. Jesse was a farmer, with $6500 in real estate and $16,000 in personal estate.[4] The 1860 Slave Schedule reported Jesse H Hardy as owning 13 enslaved people in 2 slave houses: 45 F B, 33 M B, 31 M B, 27 F B, 27 M B, 25 F B, 23 M B, 21 M B, 13 M B, 9 M B, 4 M B, 5 M B, 1 M B.[5]

Residence 1870: Mosely Hall, Lenoir County, North Carolina as head of household Jesse H Hardy (37) with Martha A Hardy (33), Alice Hardy (12), Ciscero Hardy (7), Dallas M Hardy (5), Rolin L Hardy (3) and Leone O Hardy (9 months).([6]

Residence 1880: Lenoir Institute Township, Lenoir County, North Carolina as head of household Jesse H Hardy (42) with wife Martha Hardy (43), son Cicero Hardy (17), son Dallas Hardy (15), don Roland Hardy (13), daughter Leone Hardy (10), son Julius Hardy (8), son Ira Hardy (6), son Guy Hardy (3), daughter Byah Hardy (1) and Mary Owen (22).[7]

Death: 1897, age 59

Burial: Hardy Family Cemetery, Lenoir County, North Carolina [8]
