Biography

Sarah Story was probably born in about 1678, in Ipswich, Essex County, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of Seth Story and Elizabeth (Unknown).[1]

Note on Birth Date: There is no known surviving documentation for Sarah Story's birth date. Recent genealogists have given 1676 as her year of birth,[2] for unknown reasons. The Jewett genealogy, which does not give a surname for her, states that she (as the widow of Maximilian Jewett and, then, of Capt. Samuel Pickard) died on 26 Aug 1771, in her 94th year.[3] This would give an age of 93 and a prospective birth year of 1678. She would, then, have been about 20 when she married Maximilian Jewett. This later date makes more sense, given her mother's calculated birth date of 1651.

Sarah married Maximillian Jewett (or Jewit) of Rowley, probably in 1698 or earlier (based on the birth of her eldest child, Hannah, on 6 Apr 1699).[4] Maximillian was born in Rowley on 5 Feb 1671, the son of Ezekiell Jewett and Faith Parrat.[5][6] After their marriage, they lived in Blyfield Parish, in the part of Rowley which was incorporated in 1838 as Georgetown.[7][8]

Sarah and Maximillian had eight children whose births were registered in Rowley:

  • Hannah Jewett (b. 6 Apr 1699)[9] m. Jan 1717/8, John Tenney[10] (b. 14 Oct 1696, Rowley, son Daniel Tenney and Mary Hardy)[11]
  • Elizabeth Jewett (b. 3 Mar 1700/01)[12] m. int. 18 Oct 1722, Caleb Brown[13] (b. 23 Oct 1697, Reading, Worcester County, son Cornelius Brown and Susannah Story)[14]
  • Seth Jewett (b. 15 Oct 1704)[15] m. (1) int. 12 Feb 1726/7, in Rowley, Dorcas Hardy[16]; (2) 6 Sep 1739, in Bradford, Mehitible Hardy[17] (dtr. Joseph Hardy and Mary Burbank, b. 20 Mar 1717/8, Bradford)[18]
  • Sarah Jewett (b. 3 Jun 1707)[19] m. Joseph Pickard (b. 17 Mar 1699/1700, son Samuel Pickard and Elizabeth Hale)[20]
  • Faith Jewett (b. 30 Apr 1710)[21] m. 30 Mar 1736, in Ipswich, Paul Dodge[22] (b. ca. 1710, son Richard Dodge and Martha Low)
  • Hepsebah Jewett (b. 2 Nov 1712)[23] never married
  • Ann Jewett (b. 17 Jul 1715)[24] m. 23 Apr 1735, at Rowley, Charles Tuttle, Jr., of Ipswich[25][26] (probably, "Tuttle, Charles, s. Charles, bp. Sept. --, 1715, according to the records of The Hamlet Parish Church)[27]
  • Jeremiah Jewett (b. 11 Sep 1720)[28] m. int. 27 Mar 1742, in Ipswich, Elizabeth Choate[29] (dtr. Samuel Choate and Mary Brown, bp. 26 Jan 1717, Ipswich)

Deacon Maximilian Jewett died in 1730 or before, since Sarah was granted administration of his estate in 1730.[30][31]

Sarah Story Jewett and Captain Samuel Pickard published their intention to marry in Rowley on 20 May 1731.[32] When her father died in Ipswich the next year, Sarah received a bequest of s20.[33]

Captain Pickard died in Rowley on 2 Sep 1751, "in his 89th year," and was buried in the Rowley Cemetery.[34]

Sarah Story Jewett Pickard died "in her 94th year," on 26 Aug 1771.[35] Her will, dated 22 Nov 1768, was proved on 23 Sep 1771.[36][37]

1676 -- Sarah was born presumably at Rowley Essex county, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

1699 - 1720 -- Deacon Maxmillian and Sarah Jewett had eight children: six daughters and two sons.

Circa 1730 -- Sarah's first husband, Deacon Maxmillian Jewett died.

May 20, 1731 -- Widow Sarah Jewett and Widower Captain Samuel Pickard announced their intention to marry.

September 2, 1751 -- Sarah's second husband, Captain Samuel Pickard died.

August 26, 1771 -- Sarah Hardy Jewett Pickard died at either Rowley or Byfield, Essex county, Province of Massachusetts Bay "in her 94th or 95th year. 'She had been employed as a Midwife & was much respected in her place & station; but was worn out with Eating age till the weary wheels of life at length stood still.' (Byfield Ch[urch] R[ecord.]. Her will was dated November 22, 1768."
