George HARDY was born in about 1822 in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire, England [1]. He was the son of John HARDY and Nancy or Ann KING.
Teenage Years
In 1841, George lived with his parents, John and Ann HARDY, and his brother, James HARDY, 16. John, 69, was a farmer and Ann was 48. She was born outside Hertfordshire. [2]
Working Life
In 1851, George was a farmer of 13 acres in Upper East End, Furneux Pelham, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. He employed one man. [1] Later, in 1861, he was a beer house keeper. He was still in Upper East End.
First Marriage
On the 10 October 1844, George married Fanny KNIGHT, after banns, at Furneux Pelham. George was a beer shop keeper. He lived in Upper East End. His father, John HARDY, was a farmer. Fanny was a servant. She lived in Lower East End. Her father, James KNIGHT, was a labourer. The couple were single and of full age. The witnesses were William SAVILLE and Louisa HARDY. Fanny signed her name. Everyone else signed with their marks. [3] William SAVILLE was probably a relation of George's future wife, Sarah SAVILLE.
Widower
Sadly, Fanny had passed away in 1847. On the night of the 30 March 1851, George lived with his daughter, Emily, 6, and mother. Ann HARDY nee KING, 56, at Upper East End, Furneux Pelham. George was a widower of 29. Ann was a widow and Emily a farmer's daughter. All the family members were born in Furneux Pelham. The family lived next door to the SAVILLE family, including George's future wife, Sarah. Also living next door was James Hardy BASS and his family. [1]
Second Marriage
On the 8 June 1852, George married Sarah SAVILL or SAVILLE, in Saint Mary the Virgin, Arkesden, Essex, England. His father was John HARDY. Sarah's father was George SAVILL. [4]
Last Years
George passed away in about 1880. His death was registered during the last quarter of that year in Bishops Stortford. His age was 60 years. [5]
