Biography

Emma was born in 1866 at Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the daughter of George Hare and Mary Wilkinson. The registration of her birth has not been located.

In the 1871 census Emma was living with her parents and siblings at Humber Bank, Barrow on Humber. She was aged 4 years. [1]

In 1881 the family was living at Finkle Lane, Barton on Humber. Emma, aged 14, was attending school. [2]

In 1891 Emma was working as a domestic servant in the home of Alexander Smith, a timber merchant, and family at Woodleigh, Hessle, Yorkshire. She was aged 24 years. [3]

In 1901 Emma, aged 34, was working as a domestic nurse in the home of Henry Wethered and family at Ferncliffe, Bristol, Gloucestershire. She was one of 5 servants in the household. [4]

In 1911 Emma, aged 44, a domestic nurse, was recorded boarding in the home of William Clampitt and his wife at 1 Belle Vue, Bude, Cornwall. Herbert Wethered, his wife and two children were also boarding there. As Emma had been working for the Wethered family, including Herbert, the son of Henry Wethered, in 1901 it is probable she was still in their employ. Herbert was an artist. [5]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Emma was living with her sister in law Sarah Ellen Hare, the widow of Charles Albert Hare, at School House, Kexby, Yorkshire. Emma, born 28 August 1866, was aged 73. She was then a retired domestic servant. [6]

Emma Hare died in 1951 aged 85 years. [7]
