Biography

William Ernest was born in 1891 at Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the son of Walter Hare and Anne Hare formerly Harvey. [1]

William Ernest Hare was baptised on 19 November 1891 at Barton St. Peter. His parents were then living at Waterside, Barton and father Walter was a labourer. The baptismal register recorded William’s date of birth as 24 October 1891. [2]

In the 1901 census William was living with his parents at Newport Street, Barton upon Humber. He was aged 9 years. [3]

In 1911 the family was living at 33 Far Ings Lane, off Waterside Rd, Barton on Humber. William, aged 19, was working as a grocer’s assistant. [4]

William Ernest Hare joined the British Expeditionary Force of World War I. He signed his attestation form to serve in the Territorial Force for the duration of the war on 24 February 1916 at Hull. At that time William was living at 19 Newport St, Barton on Humber and was aged 24 years, 4 months. He was a violinist. William's height was recorded as 5 feet, 6 inches. Next of Kin was Walter Hare, of the same address.
William was posted to the 5th (Cyclist) East Yorkshire Regiment on 24 February 1916. Regimental No. 1412.
William married Nora Rose Smith, a spinster, on 23 April 1916 at Barton upon Humber.
On 25 July 1916 William embarked a ship at Folkestone and disembarked the same day in Boulogne, France. On 26 July 1916 he was posted and transferred to 8th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. Regimental No. 30949. On 1 September William was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was reported missing on 13 November 1916 and was later confirmed as killed in action on that day. [5]

Following his death wife Nora was granted a pension of 13/9 a week from 9 July 1917. She was then living at Marsh House, Barton on Humber. William’s identity disc was returned to her the following year. Nora was later issued a memorial scroll and plague and the British War Medal and Victory Medal awarded posthumously to William. [6]
