OBITUARY. By the death of Mr. Joseph Harford at the Edwardstown schoolhouse on Sunday, the Education Department lost a thoroughly qualified headmaster and the State an earnest and a zealous educationist. He was a native of Yorkshire, having been born at Haworth in June, 1858. He came to South Australia, in 1878, and three years later entered the Education Department,he received his first appointment to the school at Mount Barker Springs. At the end of twelve months he was transferred to O.B. Flat, where he remained for 5½ years. He occupied the position of head teacher at Yahl Paddock, Caltowie, Port Broughton, and Murray Bridge, and five years ago was appointed to Edwardstown. Mr Harford was a man of much energy, and of active, enterprising mind. He was one of the leading spirits when at Murray Bridge in securing the establishment of an institute, of which he became the first secretary. While in that part of the State he, with the Hon. John Cowan, M.L.C. organised and conducted to a successful issue the first agricultural show held in the district. He was an enthusiastic gardener, and all his spare moments were devoted to agronomy and the culture of flowers. In this regard his work was both admired and appreciated. Mr. Harford left a widow and grown-up family of seven sons and one daughter.
